Revision Minimally Invasive Bunion Surgery – January 2023
Patient Background:
A 63-year-old female patient came with a recurrence of a bunion deformity. The patient had undergone standard open bunion surgery at another department three years ago. Over time, the deformity reappeared, causing pain in the big toe and difficulty walking. The patient requested a surgical solution to correct the deformity and prevent further recurrence.
Preoperative Status:
Foot Image: The preoperative photograph reveals the reoccurrence of the bunion deformity in the right big toe following the previous surgery.
Gait Video: A video of the patient’s walking shows deformation of the big toe during movement.
Postoperative Course:
Surgery: A minimally invasive correction was performed through skin punctures under X-ray control.
X-ray: The postoperative X-ray confirms sufficient displacement of the metatarsal head and proper alignment of the toe joints. The position of the second toe was also corrected.
Fixation: The toe bone was stabilized using three titanium screws placed completely inside the bone. The screws are permanent, do not require removal, and cannot be felt.
Results After Surgery:
6 Weeks Post-Operative: The big toe is corrected to its proper position. Postoperative swelling is present. The foot has regained its natural shape, allowing for a full weight-bearing gait.
4 Months Post-Operative: Swelling is minimal, and the scars are fading. Pain has disappeared, and walking difficulties are resolved. The deformity has been permanently corrected.
X-ray Results at 4 Months: The bone is fully healed, and the corrected position remains stable. The patient can resume sports activities and be fully weight-bearing without restrictions.
Conclusion:
This case demonstrates that minimally invasive revision bunion surgery effectively solves recurrent deformities. The procedure achieves long-term correction, pain relief, and restored foot functionality while providing a faster recovery and improved patient comfort.
