Bunions: Modern Treatment Brings Pain Relief
Myths and misconceptions surrounding the origin and treatment of hallux valgus were explained and refuted by doc. MUDr. Rastislav Hromádka, Ph.D., orthopaedic surgeon and podiatrist from the Orthopaedic Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of Charles University and Motol University Hospital, as well as the Canadian Medical Clinic.
What is a Bunion?
Hallux valgus is a genetic defect that appears as a deformity of the big toe, leading to a change in its natural axis. Over time, the mobility of the toe decreases, causing a visible bulge and increasing pain. If left untreated, the condition may progress to arthrosis.
Factors Affecting the Condition:
Lifestyle: Body weight and proper foot care play a significant role.
Footwear: The suitability of shoes is a key factor.
Long-term Consequences: Wearing unsuitable footwear or ignoring symptoms accelerates the progression of the deformity.
The Influence of Footwear:
"A significant link between hallux valgus and footwear has been demonstrated," explains doc. Hromádka. He further points out that problems with bunions have become more common in populations that have only recently begun wearing modern footwear.
Who is Most at Risk?
"The majority of patients are women who wear elegant but medically inappropriate shoes," adds doc. Hromádka.
Conclusion:
Modern treatment techniques offer significant pain relief and substantially improve the quality of life for patients suffering from bunions.
